Missouri is rich in history and natural beauty. From pristine lakes and mighty rivers to quaint towns and entertainment meccas, there is something for every age and interest. One of the best ways to visit Missouri is by camping.
Our Missouri travel guide includes 6 of the best camping spots to consider.
Missouri Camping Guide: An Intro
The “Show Me State” is located in the heart of the Midwest. Both the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers run through the state. Historically, Saint Louis served as the “gateway to the west”, as it was the starting point of both the Santa Fe and Oregon trails.
You will find major cities, including Saint Louis, Kansas City, and Branson. You’ll also find beautiful spots to please your nature-loving heart, including the Ozark Mountains, natural springs, lakes, and of course the state’s mighty rivers.
Now let’s get to the best camping grounds.
- St. Louis West/Historic Route 66 KOA – Eureka
This campground provides a great mix of history, outdoor adventure, and relaxation. There are a ton of activities for kids, including a heated pool, river rafting, train rides, gem mining, basketball courts, outdoor movies, and hayrides.
Plus, you’re close to St. Louis attractions like the Gateway Arch, Missouri Botanical Gardens, Anheuser-Busch Brewery, and the St. Louis Zoo.
- Table Rock State Park – Branson
Table Rock State Park gets you close to all the entertainment action in Branson. It also provides plenty of outdoor activities, including biking, hiking, boating, swimming, and fishing. You’ll find small, intimate campsites as well as larger ones that are suitable for families.
- Meramec Caverns Campground – Stanton
This campground has RV hookups, a covered pavilion, and beautiful riverfront camping sites. This a great site if you’re into more adventurous activities, with options like touring the caverns, canoeing along the river, and zip-lining.
- Roaring River State Park – Cassville
One of the most popular camping sites in Missouri is Roaring River State Park in the Ozark Hills. The river is stocked with rainbow trout so if fishing is your goal, this place is not to be missed. There are also seven hiking trails, a pool, picnic tables, and a nature center.
- Lazy Day Campground – Danville
If you just want to relax and unwind, Lazy Days Campgrounds is a perfect choice. There’s a ½ acre dog park so even Fido can come along on the trip. There’s also a stocked, 3-acre pond and swimming pool.
Nearby, you’ll find local wineries (yes wineries in Missouri!), zip-lining, and several museums.
- Campground at the Falls – Pineville
Water lovers will appreciate the Campground at the Falls not far from Joplin, MO. You’ll enjoy the falls, as well as swimming and fishing. There’s also a shallow lazy river, which is something younger children will enjoy.
Don’t miss the 5-mile canoe trip, which affords beautiful vistas and wildlife along the river.
If you’re retired and looking to live in Missouri, be sure to visit Mari de Villa, a luxury senior living community in St. Louis.
