Here’s why I am not buying the £795 business class tickets Europe to USA on British Airways

At the moment there are some very competitively priced business class tickets available on British Airways for travel in 2021. These originate in Luxembourg and Brussels and fly via London Heathrow to cities in the USA. I’m not buying them, though I am sorely tempted.

You can get to Boston for £795, Miami for £820, San Jose, San Francisco and New York for £920, Montreal for £995, Dallas and Toronto for £999 and Chicago and Seattle for £1,030 and £1,065. For Club World, these prices are as cheap as it gets.

Reasons To Buy

The main reason to buy these is that they are cheap, cheap, cheap. The fares don’t get any cheaper than this, so usually I would be all over one of these in a second flat.

As they’re in business class, Executive Club members can upgrade to first class using their Avios points. Club World to First transatlantic is a very good use of the miles you have earned. In fact, this is exactly how I flew first class a few years ago, buying a cheap fare from a European city and upgrading.

Why I Am Not Buying

First and foremost is the possibility that the United States will not be open. With the pandemic, you need to have a US Passport to go to stateside right now. Will we be able to travel there in 2021? Who knows. The uncertainty is why I am not buying, even if you can swap for a voucher if you don’t want to travel (providing you book before 30 September 2020).

Avail of the British Airways Club Suite

The other reason is the on board service. British Airways currently have an extremely abbreviated service on flights. Club World has no hot food for one, and even though first class does, it is nothing compared to how it was in the past. It is pointless to waste money or points when you might not getting the full experience. As BA have given no visibility about when this might change, I can’t plan ahead with any certainty here.

Overall Thoughts

I am usually quite fine to purchase airline tickets. I’m even planning to go to the USA next year, and I booked a ticket with British Airways. My speculative booking to Denver cost me the princely sum of €288 return. Yes, in World Traveller aka economy class.

At that price point, I am happy being thrown a bag of crap to eat, which is essentially what the on board service has been reduced to. I will feel less aggrieved with a bare bones onboard meal as I’m paying virtually nothing for it, so I might as well keep myself happy while on my flight.

What say you? Are you also not buying these flights or are you more optimistic than me – a dyed in the wool optimist by the way – in this situation? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.

3 Reasons Why The New Wyndham Business Credit Card Offers Excellent Value

When Wyndham Hotels overhauled their loyalty program to a single award tier several years ago, I knew the value was too good to be true. They have since moved on to an award chart with three tiers, and I exited any real involvement, burning the last of my points this year. However, with the launch of a few new co-branded credit cards, I might be willing to take another look. In particular, the new Wyndham business credit card offers real ongoing value.

Wyndham Earner Business Credit Card

The Wyndham Earner Business Credit Card is one of three new co-branded Wyndham credit cards. There are two personal cards, the Earner and Earner+, in addition to the Wyndham business credit card. The Earner card has the weakest welcome offer and benefits, but it is the only one without an annual fee. The Wyndham business credit card is the strongest, but it has the highest annual fee.

Here are some quick details of the Wyndham Earner Business Credit Card:

Earn 45,000 bonus points, enough for up to 6 free nights after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first 90 days. Free nights can require up to 30,000 points per bedroom at participating properties and are subject to availability.Earn 8 points per $1 spent on eligible purchases made at Hotels By Wyndham as well as on qualifying gas purchases.Earn 5 points per $1 spent on eligible marketing, advertising services, and utilities.Earn 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchasesAutomatically receive a Wyndham Rewards Diamond member levelReceive 15,000 bonus points each anniversary yearRedeem 10% fewer Wyndham Rewards points for Go Free awardsNo foreign transaction fees$95 annual fee

Here are three reasons why this card is a great fit for people who even occasionally frequent Wyndham properties:

Great Earning Rate on Wyndham Hotels and Gas

The new Wyndham business credit card offers the highest earning rate of the three cards on both Wyndham Hotel stays and gas. The 8x earning rate will quickly build your points balance. With complimentary Diamond status, you’ll earn 20 points per dollar spent at Wyndham hotels (10 base points + 2 Diamond bonus + 8 credit card). This is a return of ~16%. I value Wyndham points at 0.8 cents each. There are better returns out there for hotel stays for sure.

However, the earning rate on gas is intriguing. There are other great cards out there for gas purchases, but 8x Wyndham points per dollar means that you only need $1,875 of gas spend to earn 15,000 points for a free night. Actually, you only need 13,500 points (10% less) for free nights if you hold any of the new Wyndham cards, so you get there even quicker. The 8x earning rate on gas is a return of ~6.4%.

Excellent Anniversary Bonus

One of the reasons I held onto the old Wyndham credit card for so long was the fact that it offered an anniversary bonus of 15,000 Wyndham Rewards points. When Wyndham had a single award tier, this was enough for a free night at any of their properties.

However, once Wyndham switched to more than one tier, at least 400 of the top properties doubled in price. Pretty much all of the places I had previously used my points now required 30,000 points. The value was no longer there for me, and I burnt my points and canceled the card.

The Wyndham business credit card offers 15,000 points as an anniversary bonus. By itself, this isn’t enough to turn my head. I value 15,000 Wyndham points at around $120, which isn’t much of a premium on the $95 annual fee. But combined with another benefit, it offers a lot more value.

Diamond Go Free PLUS Awards

While Wyndham elite status is rarely something to write home about, the Go Free PLUS awards are a unique feature that can save you a lot of money as a Diamond member. At the lower tiers (and sometimes as Diamond), you’ll simply receive a $5 credit. However, is select cities, Wyndham Diamond members are offered two tickets to a unique local experience. This value can sometimes top $70, and you’ll receive this benefit for a one-night stay. Here are some sample from some of the cities:

Charleston – Two tickets to the South Carolina AquariumChicago – Two tickets to the Famous Tastes of Chicago food tourNashville – Two tickets to the Country Music Hall of FameLondon – Two tickets to the London Eye Champagne ExperienceVancouver – Two tickets to a Vancouver City Tour including Capilano Suspension Bridge

The Wyndham business credit card helps you two-fold. First, it grants you complimentary Diamond status. Second, it offers 15,000 points per year, which means you can get a minimum of one free night per year in a participating city with the Go Free PLUS perk, should you choose to plan your night in one of the locations. This alone is entirely worth the $95 annual fee.

Wyndham Business Credit Card: Final Thoughts

If you’re unfamiliar with Wyndham Hotels, there are a few things to note. First, the portfolio is dominated by cheap properties. Wyndham contains brands such as Super 8, Howard Johnson, and Travelodge. Finding nice properties can be a chore. Second, the elite program is pretty weak. Third, the international portfolio is very weak. There are many popular locations with no properties.

Still, if the chain works for you, the new Wyndham business credit card may offer excellent ongoing value. I got good mileage out of my old Wyndham credit card for four years before I canceled it last year. The new business card is the best of the three Wyndham offers by a long shot, due to having the highest earning rate, the best anniversary bonus, and Diamond status for their PLUS awards, which are sometimes a fantastic value in select cities.

What do you think of the new Wyndham business credit card?

These Caribbean Islands Offer Both Luxury and Adventure

What is the first thing that comes into your mind when someone says ‘Caribbean Islands’? Most people would say something like ‘beautiful beaches, amazing waters, relax, calm, sun, etc.’ While all of these associations are understandable (we’re talking about the Caribbeans after all), many people tend to forget that the Caribbean Islands are so much more than that.

There are plenty of outdoor activities that can occupy your time there – climbing, exploring the waters with a boat, jet skiing (we recommend checking out some jet ski tips beforehand so that you can have an idea about what to expect and how to prepare yourself for this experience), and more. We believe that everyone should get to know the Caribbeans from their adventurous side, which is why we created this short list.

The islands that we listed below offer you not only an amazing dose of adventure, with several hiking treks, volcanos, and water activities but also luxury. It’s hard to find an island that doesn’t have a luxurious resort, which means that you can spend the day climbing mountains, and in the evening, you can go for a full SPA treatment. This is actually a great combination, as all the moving you’ve done during the day will really make you feel that you deserved the evening relax.

So, if you want to find out more about the Caribbean Islands that will offer you both luxury and adventure, all you have to do is keep reading. Without further ado, let’s get started.

Top 5 Caribbean Caribbean Islands

1. Saint Lucia

The first position on our list is St Lucia – a sovereign island country located on the ‘border’ of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

The island is dominated by volcanic peaks, with volcanic beaches and reefs filling out the coast. There are a lot of trees, waterfalls, and trails, making it the perfect holiday spot for hikers who love both nature and luxury. Saint Lucia is home to the Pitons’ twin peaks, which are recognized by UNESCO as one of the World Heritage Sites. There are two main treks on the island – the Gros Piton and the Tet Paul Nature Trail.

If you are an animal lover, then you’d be glad to hear that you can also find something for yourself – the island is home to the Edmund Forest Reserve, where you can observe more than 180 species of birds.

2. Jamaica

Probably the first thing that comes into your mind when thinking about ‘Jamaica’ is fun, reggae, Bob Marley, and ganja. However, apart from this, Jamaica is a great place for adventurous people, as it is full of mountains, forests, and hiking treks.

Jamaica’s most popular trek is called the Blue Mountain Peak Trail. It’s a great way to explore the beautiful island. You will also have a chance to try the Blue Mountain Coffee at the source – one of the world-renowned coffees.

3. The British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands consist of four main islands – Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke – and over fifty smaller islands and cays. Only 16 of them are inhabited, though. It’s worth mentioning that many celebrities and millionaires have beach houses there.

When it comes to what to do when on vacation there, there are plenty of options. All islands are home to beautiful white-sand beaches, sparkling waters, and bays. You can rent a boat and admire the blue waters. If you love meeting new people, you should consider chartering a boat – who knows, maybe your cabinmate will become your lifetime friend? If you prefer to go on an adventure alone, you can always rent a private charter.

One of the things you should not miss out on when visiting the British Virgin Islands is seeing Anegada. Anegada is an island sitting on a coral reef. Among its attractions, you can find beaches, flamingos, an iguana sanctuary (the entrance is free for your information), and a population of wild cows that is almost higher than the number of people.

4. Saint Kitts

St Kitts and Nevis is an island country, located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

When it comes to St Kitts, almost a quarter of it is a designated national park, the majority of it being rainforest. The rainforest serves as home to amazing wildlife, so this is definitely your best bet if you love animals. You will be able to see green vervet monkeys, hummingbirds, rare lizards, and so much more. For those who are more into hiking or climbing, there are many treks, including one that leads to the summit of Mount Liamuiga – while completing it, you will be able to see the Devil’s Tooth – a crater rim half a mile wide.

5. Nevis

Nevis, the other half of St Kitts and Nevis, is an island dominated by a volcano, known as Nevis Peak. As easy climbing it might seem, it’s actually a complete opposite. In some of its sections, you will need to use pre-rigged ropes, which is why it’s recommended, when hiking this trek, to use a decent gear and a guide – especially since the trail is muddy, slippery, and steep. However, all the hard work that needs to be put into hiking is repaid once you reach to the top, as the views are spectacular.

The Bottom Line

When you think about ‘Caribbean Islands’, you probably imagine white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and sun all year round. While this is an understandable association, the Caribbean Islands are actually paradise for people who love adventure and outdoor activities – on the majority of them, you can find at least one trek, and let’s not forget about the rare wildlife that you can easily encounter.

However, the islands are also home to many luxurious resorts, which means that you can find the perfect balance between luxury and adventure – you can spend the day away climbing the mountains, and then come back to your 5-star accommodation. It’s a perfect combo, don’t you think?
