The Caribbean’s Best Underwater Treasures To Explore

The Caribbean is home to world-renowned diving spots like the Western Hemisphere’s largest coral reef off the coast of Honduras and the second-deepest submerged sinkhole, which is near Belize. These popular, natural sites are brimming with marine life like nurse sharks, giant groupers, sea turtles and thousands of tropical fish. And for many, the most exciting dives are something out of a Caribbean movie and a piece of history with shipwrecks and maritime legends of sunken treasure.

While divers and snorkelers may not come back with gold, these incredible, submerged structures are their own sort of treasure, thanks to their otherworldly beauty and enduring history—and a Royal Caribbean cruise can take you to them.

Check out our top five Caribbean underwater treasures:

The MV Captain Keith Tibbetts is the only Soviet-era shipwreck in the Western Hemisphere.

MV Captain Keith Tibbetts – George Town, Grand Cayman

The Cayman Islands are a treasure trove of history with as many as 365 dive sites scattered along the nation’s shores—from British naval ships to USS submarines. The MV Captain Keith Tibbetts is a 330-foot frigate and the only divable Soviet Union-made ship in the Western Hemisphere. Intentionally sunk along the north shore of Cayman Brac, the frigate is now a popular, artificial reef that is home to thousands of grouper, grunts and more than 100 species of fish and coral.

Given the size of Odyssey, there’s plenty to check out as you journey under water.

Odyssey – Roatan, Honduras

Almost 110 feet below the surface and just off the shore of Roatan, Honduras lies Odyssey. After a damaging fire ended its hauling career, the 300-foot freighter was purposefully restored, cleaned and subsequently sunk in 2002 to create a new, advanced diving adventure. Holes were even intentionally cut in the hull to enable further exploration of the otherwise intact vessel. The site is the largest in Roatan and one of the largest in the Caribbean, requiring multiple visits to truly explore it in its entirety. It’s also conveniently located near local reefs.

Pro tip: Royal Caribbean is the only cruise line that offers diving certification with Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) Five Star Dive Centers on board.

SS Sapona may not be fully submerged, but it still makes for a great diving adventure.

SS Sapona – Bimini, The Bahamas

Not all shipwrecks are fully submerged. The SS Sapona sits in 15 feet of water, just a few miles off the Bahamian island of South Bimini. The ship is a unique concrete-hulled cargo steamer and was first commissioned during World War I due to a steel shortage. Having run aground in The Bahamas in 1926 after a hurricane, it was opened to diving and snorkeling in 1945. Diving between the “pillars” of its rusted hull, explorers can get a peek at the ship’s inner workings as well as the tropical fish taking shelter there.

After more than 100 years under water, this ship—the Berwyn—is almost unrecognizable covered in corals and sponges.

Berwyn – Bridgetown, Barbados

Barbados has a reputation for being a home to many of the healthiest reefs in the Caribbean and multiple shipwrecks that turned into ideal diving spots. Topping the list is the Berwyn, a French tugboat from World War I that sought shelter in Bridgetown after coming under fire, and was mysteriously sunk by its own crew shortly thereafter in 1919 (rumor is they didn’t want to leave Barbados). More than a century later, the ship stands upright and largely intact, overgrown with sponges and corals in Carlisle Bay.

Miss Opportunity is one chance to explore you won’t want to miss.

Miss Opportunity – Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

With the largest concentration of wrecks in the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Thomas boasts a number of top dives beyond its wide selection of coral reefs and pinnacles—small, underwater masses of rocks. Another ship that was intentionally sunk in 1985, Miss Opportunity lies tilted on her starboard side, making for an eerie dive between decks. Adventurers can opt to begin at the top deck, now the deepest section of the ship, then make their way to shallower waters.

What to Do in Ventnor City

History & Cultural Focus City – VENTNOR City Oldest Standing House & First Church Constructed in the City.

Anita Metzer House 6209 Ventnor Ave.
The oldest standing house in Ventnor City.

In the latter part of the 19th Century, an American couple visiting England became so impressed with the beauty of the locality that in 1889, when the Camden and Atlantic Land Company decided to name the section of the land south of Atlantic City, they remembered Ventnor, England.

Mrs. S. Bartram Richards, suggested that the name, Ventnor, would be an ideal fit for this exciting new area. This name was suggested on January 8,1889 by Mrs. Richards, who was the wife of the secretary-treasurer of the land company. This name was formally adopted the following day. Although the City received its name in January of 1889, it was not officially recognized until it received it’s incorporation by the State of New Jersey on March 17, 1903.

St. Johns by the Sea R.E. Church – Sacramento & Ventnor Avenues

Chapter 51 of the laws and Sessions of the State of New Jersey provided the noble beginning to Ventnor City stating, “Be it enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of New Jersey that all part or portion of the County of Atlantic, formerly a part of Egg Harbor Township, situate on Absecon Beach, lying between the Westwardly limit of Atlantic City and the Eastwardly limit of South Atlantic City, the Atlantic Ocean on the south as far as the jurisdiction of the State extends, and to the center of Beach Thoroughfare on the North, be, and is hereby constituted as a City of this State, and all of the inhabitants of the State residing within the limits aforesaid be and they are hereby ordained, constituted and declared to be from time to time forever hereafter one body politic and corporate, in fact and in name, by the name, Ventnor City.”

VENTNOR BEACHES – Kayak, Surfing & Fishing

Ventnor’s beach was once much sandier, though because of several epic storms one winter, it turned into a fair bit shinglier. It is still a lovely coastline with chintzy little seaside huts that were at one-time bathing huts on wheels along with lots of superb chip eating spots.

Fishing Pier at Cambridge Avenue is much less accessible compared to Ventnor though it is a favourite of several. However, the operation hour is only around 10am to 6pm due to no lifeguard assigned to this beach. Visitors are also available to surf in this beach as it is one of the lovely surfing beach in this town.

The USA’s earliest theme park is still a family favourite, despite today becoming a little pricier than you may remember if you visited in 1990.

Everybody who went on the school trip on the Isle of Wight will reminisce concerning Black gang Chine’s Crooked House, the maze, the dinosaurs, the cowboys, as well as the great smuggler. It is also in an unbeatable place, hanging on the advantage of a rather precarious coastline.

Ventnor library having some great collection and of course it is also very accessible from Ventnor beach, where bathrooms are also available for visitors to take a bath and having a good rest while having leisure reading time after some beach activities. Furthermore, this library is free of charge with operating hours from 9am to 8pm.
